#inspired – so much jazz

I just wanted to share a quick thought with you all:

One of the coolest things about being a musician, is that I’m constantly surrounded by creativity & inspiration. There is always somebody out there – be it my neighbour, my roommate, a person on the internet, another musician performing at a show – who is doing something that is going to make me want to work harder at what I do. There’s always something for me that I can listen to or see that will make me think of something I should write into a tune, something I should play or sing or do. Other people make me want to work harder, make me more creative, inspire me…and it`s great.

This past couple days, I`ve been listening to a few things – mostly saxophone players and mostly jazz. Albums like Coltrane’s Sound, Inner Urge, and Ultrahang (for something slightly different, of course) have been on my playlist lately. I’m playing on a musical called Crazy For You, which is all Gershwin tunes, so those have been in my head. On a slightly different tack, the new Baths track “Miasma Sky” I think is super cool, and if you’re not already into him, Cerulean is definitely worth checking out. Obsidian is out May 28, and I’m stoked.

And while I’m thinking about it, other releases worth mentioning – Winter Morning Walks, the new Maria Schneider album, is on its way to me and I couldn’t be more excited. Between that and Brooklyn Babylon from Darcy James Argue at the end of April, I will be absorbing myself in new big band music for the whole summer – at the very least, the month of May.

This morning, as I start working on stuff for large ensemble again (a piece for school and another piece for the Socialist Night School), the album I listened to last night is what’s motivating me right now. I haven’t ever sat down and listened to Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite before, and I have NO idea why I haven’t. I put in on yesterday and was completely drawn in; it’ll probably be what I listen to for the rest of the day when I have a spare moment. (rest of the weekend…rest of the month…)

So that’s what I’ve been listening to lately; what’s been inspiring you?
